Interacting with Your Child During Play

December 10,2025

We should join the child according to the direction of the child's play. For example, if the child is rolling a car and playing, we should also roll a car and race with the child. Or if the child is placing blocks, we should also participate in that activity.

Similarly, parents should come down to the child's eye level and interact face-to-face while playing.

In the same way, when we choose toys and play materials to use with the child, we should select them based on the child’s interests and age.

When we play with the child, we should describe the things the child is doing. “Wow, you built these blocks so well. That doll is very beautiful. How do we brush the doll’s teeth? Shall we give the doll a bath? Shall we feed the doll?” In this way, we should interact with the child during play.

Likewise, we can always introduce turn-taking games while playing with the child. “First it’s dad’s turn. After that, it’s the child’s turn. After that, it’s the monkey’s turn. After the monkey’s turn, whose turn is next?” This way we maintain turn-taking, interaction, and eye contact during play with the child.

Similarly, the time we set aside to play with the child should be exclusively for the child. During that time, we should not pay attention to family matters, mobile phones, office work, or anything else. It should be completely for the child.
