When children are taken for therapy and training, we still use action songs as a medium to teach them how to talk, pay attention, and respond back.
Through songs, children learn new words, learn the names of shapes, learn colors, learn body parts, and learn alphabets. All these can be taught to children. Especially for children who have difficulty in understanding, songs as a medium greatly help them to learn new words.
When children are put in a group for music sessions, social interaction and sharing can also be taught through music. When playing musical instruments, it helps children a lot in developing timing, rhythm, as well as their five motor skills. Listening to songs and helping them sing also helps a lot in improving children’s emotional regulation.
When choosing music as a medium to train children, these kinds of songs are the ones we should select. We should not select highly rhythmic songs with too much noise and loudness. Also, showing songs through videos or playing them repeatedly will create an obsession in children with that song, and they will keep singing it all the time unnecessarily.
Instead, the best way is when we sing live in front of children and play action songs with them, their active responses and interaction can be developed much better. When selecting songs, if they include names of animals or names of fruits, children can learn such concepts and also achieve development in their language.
